About Ayahuasca

History of Ayahuasca

The history of Ayahuasca goes back to ancient times, its origin is a mystery, and it is used by the indigenous peoples in the Amazon in a ritual of healing.

The Ayahuasca history starts in the Amazon, where indigenous people used it as a sacred plant in rituals for healing. Upon drinking Ayahuasca one might experience a purge and clarity of mind.

The original word (ayahuasca) comes from Quechua language and means “rope that links the living and the dead”. This language extends to various South American regions: Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, part of the Brazilian rainforest, Bolivia, north of Argentina and north of Chile. This means, the ancient Inca Empire.

Ayahuasca, also called Yage, is a beverage used by the indigenous people of the Latin American Amazon rainforest as a part of a purification ritual. It is considered a gift from the Gods, destined to lead humanity to a rebirth or return to its origins. Healing teachers are responsible for preparing Ayahuasca, using plants that are only found in the Amazon rainforest.

For them, these sacred plants transmit wisdom, in addition to having highly curative properties. Different research considers the Ayahuasca ceremonies as a tool that helps break down physical perceptions, allowing those who drink it to gain a different view of life and what surrounds them. Once the Ayahuasca is drank, the experiences can be intense with a duration of four to five hours of the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical aspect, often ending in clarity of mind. They may feel like crying, laughing or just being in a state of contemplation, everything depends of the preparation, mental maturity, emotional strength and physical strength. Drinking Ayahuasca can be considered as a sort of exorcism, as a liberation from all our ghosts, and at the same time it is considered by several experts to be an efficient form of alternative medicine.

The composition

The composition of Ayahuasca is obtained by cooking the Ayahuasca vine and the chacruna leaves. The DMT proportion is of 1%.

The components of the Ayahuasca are based on different plants that can only be found in the Amazon rainforest of Latin America. As a main ingredient we have the liana called Ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi) which has curative and therapeutic properties for the treatment of diseases and emotional ills, and the leaves of Chacruna (Psychotria viridis), a shrub, which psychoactive effect is activated by the components in Ayahuasca.

To this composition is also possible to add leaves of a plant known in the Amazon as floripondio or toe and even coca leaves.

There is DMT in both Ayahuasca and chacruna, an alkaloid with psychedelic effects that is obtained by cooking the plants. Even though it has a strong psychoactive composition, it cannot be considered a classic drug with negative effects. On the contrary, it is essential that it consumption isn´t in a recreational way. A series of studies have proven that the effects of Ayahuasca don´t cause any type of toxicity on the human body. Consuming Ayahuasca in a controlled way don’t even create any side effects, addictions or withdrawal symptoms, on the contrary, DMT in Ayahuasca acts as a catalyst for introspection.

Healing with Ayahuasca

Our ancestors used all the natural resources they had in their place of origin for not only medicinal purposes but also to learn the right way of living, the right way to interact with the world and their gods. At the present time it is called “entheogens” (neologism that means God within us), meaning these agents, the product of plants with power to allow us to live through a subjective experience but full of vitality and with very marked achievements in the behavior and the new way of thinking in relation to the surrounding world. Although there are many entheogens, not all can be freely used by anyone and the use of these products must be carefully supervised by professionals or by teachers. The native communities in the Peruvian Amazon learned to use them through ayahuasca rituals, applying it from ancestral times as a method of healing.

Ayahuasca helps to release negative emotions that may have been accumulating for years and that remain hidden, strongly rooted in the unconscious (among traumas). The effects of the plant allow the patient to have a new perspective on all the events of life, the origin of the emotions / thoughts and the reasons for the different problems that each person faces. With an objective (and often shocking) view of himself, one can discover once again in his life the meaning of purpose and peace.

Ayahuasca rituals work as a treatment, that means that more than one take may be necessary to achieve the desired effects. Each ritual offers key tools for a spiritual and psychological healing and sometimes it is the set of all these tools that will allow the patient to have a complete view of the scene. The initial work consists in purifying the body to prepare it for the following phases. This is called “purging” in different sides of the Amazon and strong physical effects (such as vomiting) in body cleansing mode are expected. From this point the reflective part begins, in which the patient will find the answers through introspection.

Safety with Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca takes us very far into the spiritual worlds, into the depth of our consciousness and that´s why the most important topic of safety is a curandero, a shaman who leads the ceremony.

Drinking Ayahuasca is a very serious matter that requires great vigilance and attention and strict adherence to certain principles and diet.

A strict diet (no alcohol, meat, various types of fish, chocolate, blue cheese etc.) lasts at least 24 hours before the ceremony, and 24 hours after the ceremony.

What is normally not toxic for us – eg. spirit beverages or fungus contained in some foods – becomes highly toxic. Active substances of Ayahuasca are indole alkaloids – besides HARMINE (also called TELEPATIN) and also the secondary alkaloids such as harmaline, tetrahydroharmin and others. All of these alkaloids are among the so-called MAO inhibitors. All these substances have unquestionably very healing effect on our body, but also make it extremely sensitive, and therefore diet is necessary.

The shaman would have to conduct a brief conversation with each participant and knows why this person comes to the ceremony and what he “requests”. Another very important part of the ritual is that the Maestro should check your physical and mental condition and heart rate before handing out Ayahuasca. According to this information he should also choose the amount of medicine.

It is always important to know the composition of medicine and for the first acquaintance with medicine it is better to find out a drink prepared only out of liana and chacruna.

In challenging situations during a ceremony it is important to maintain calm breath, listen to your body and not to hold any of its processes, such as vomiting or other types of purification.

Above all, it can´t be described the way of safety, because the real foundation and the main point of safety is shaman who chooses a safe, clean power point and his medicine should be created under many sacred conditions and also work with you, as the participants of the ceremony.

The main emphasis of safety is laid on a shaman.

It is important to avoid places and shamans, for whom the main reason of working with medicine is money, from this side threatens the danger of the greatest extent. Contraindications of Ayahuasca medicine are schizophrenia, epilepsy and severe somatic diseases, such as advanced diabetes or high blood pressure and also the state of people with severe depression or bipolar disorder. The drink is also not recommended for people taking antidepressants, particularly MAO inhibitors, because the psychoactive brew itself contains similar substances.
